今日の「聴き比べ」は『うわさの男(Everbody's Talikin')』です。
前回の「聴き比べ」でニルソンが登場したので、ついでと言っては何ですが、ニルソンの曲を取り上げたいと思います。
ハリー・ニルソン(Harry Nilsson)を知ったきっかけは以前にも書きましたが、映画『真夜中のカーボーイ』での主題歌「うわさの男」を聴いたことからでした。映画館の帰りにレコード屋に寄ってシングル盤を買ったのではないかと思います。
映画ももちろんよかったのですが、ニルソンの歌声もまた映画にピッタリで、主人公ラッツォとカウボーイのカッコをしたジョーの姿が浮かび上がります。ちなみに、ニルソンはこの映画のために『孤独のニューヨーク』という楽曲を提供したのですが、監督のジョン・シュレシンジャーは『うわさの男』を選びました。

この曲はてっきりニルソンが作った曲だと思っていたのですが、クレジットをよく読んでみると、フレッド・ニール(Fred Neil)という人の書いた曲ということでした。レコードを探しましたが、私の住んでいた田舎町にあるはずもありません。東京へ出てきてから、中古屋巡りをしてようやく見つけたのがフレッド・ニールの『Everbody's Talking』でした。

本家の曲はややスローで純朴な歌い方です。
この曲はその後もたくさんの人がカバーしましたが、私にとってはニルソンで決まりです。ハリー・ニルソンを世に知らしめた１曲でした。
