今日の「聴き比べ」は『ワン(One)』です。
またまたハリー・ニルソン(Harry Nilsson)の登場です。「うわさの男」以来、すっかりニルソンの歌声の虜になった私は、彼のアルバムを次々と買いました。そんな彼の２枚目のアルバム『空中バレー(Aerial Ballet)』に収録されていたのがこの曲でした。

実に素晴らしい曲です。歌唱力も抜群で言うこと無し。今でも愛唱歌です。
この曲をカバーして世に出たバンドがありました。スリー・ドッグ・ナイト(Three Dog Night)です。３人のボーカルを擁した人気バンドでした。
彼らの３枚目のシングルとしてこの「ワン」が選ばれ、全米で５位を記録する大ヒットとなりました。もちろん本家のニルソンのバージョンよりも売れたことは間違いありません。このヒットによって彼らはこの後続々とヒット曲を生み出しました。もっとも、彼らには自作曲というものがなく、ヒット曲は全てカバー曲でした。ランディ・ニューマンの「ママ・トールド・ミー」、ホイト・アクストンの「喜びの世界(Joy To The World)」、ポール・ウィリアムスの「オールド・ファッションド・ラブ・ソング」など、当時無名のミュージシャンの曲を取り上げてヒットさせました。そのスタートが「ワン」でした。従って彼らにとっては忘れられない曲なのです。この曲は彼らのファーストアルバム『Three Dog Night』に収められました。
そしてもう一人、いかにもこの曲を歌いそうな人物がいました。アル・クーパー(Al Kooper)です。彼についても何度も取り上げていますので詳細は割愛します。彼のファースト・ソロアルバム『I Stand Alone』でこの曲をカバーしました。いかにも、と書きましたが、彼の声質や唱法からこの曲はピッタリでした。
