今日の「聴き比べ」は『青春の光と影(Both Sides Now)』です。
この曲ほど多くの人にカバーされた曲も珍しいです。
原曲はジョニ・ミッチェル(Joni Mitchell)ですが、最初に世に出たのはジュディ・コリンズ(Judy Collins)の方でした。
１９６７年のジュディのアルバム『Wildflowers』に収録されました。
当時の日本盤のレコードを見ると、曲名が「ボース・サイズ・ナウ」になっています。
その後シングルカットされ大ヒットしました。そして１９６９年には映画『青春の光と影(原題はＣhanges)』で使われました。それから日本でも『青春の光と影』というタイトルになったと記憶しています。この映画、観たことは観たのですが内容はほとんど憶えていません。「なんでこのタイトルなの？」という疑問は当時からありました。ティム・バックリーの曲が何曲か使われていました。

そして映画が公開された年に本家のジョニ・ミッチェルがアルバム『Clouds』の中で発表しました。やっと本家の歌が聴ける、とウキウキしたものでした。いかにもジョニらしい歌唱でした。

他にも多くの人がカバーしていますが、その中で特に気にいっていたのがニール・ダイアモンド(Neil Diamond)でした。この頃のニール・ダイアモンドは絶大な人気を誇っていました。「クラックリン・ロージー」「ケンタッキー・ウーマン」「チェリー・チェリー」「スウィート・キャロライン」などのヒットを飛ばしています。そのニールが１９６９年に発表したアルバム『Touching You, Touching Me』の中でこの曲をカバーしました。
