今日の「聴き比べ」は『サマータイム(Summertime)』です。
この曲はジャズのスタンダード・ナンバーですが、元はジョージ・ガーシュイン(George Gershwin)が１９３５年にオペラ『ポギーとベス』のために作曲したアリアです。作詩は作家のデュボース・ヘイワード(DuBose Heyward)です。
最初にこの曲をヒットさせたのがビリー・ホリディ(Billie Holiday)でした。女性ジャズ・ヴォーカリストの草分け的存在です。彼女の人生は人種差別や薬物依存、アルコール依存など壮絶を極めました。彼女が歌った「奇妙な果実(Strange Fruit)」は特に有名です。

この曲はビリーの他、ジョン・コルトレーン、マイルス・デイヴィスなど多くのジャズメンやジャズ・ヴォーカリストによって歌われてきました。
ロック界ではこの人です。やはりビリーに大きな影響を受けたジャニス・ジョプリン(Janis Joplin)です。彼女のアルバム『チープ・スリル(Cheap Thrills)』でカバーしました。
ジャニスの歌を聴いていると、ビリー・ホリディとはまた違った、悲しい叫びのようなものが聞こえて切なくなります。ジャニスの人生も又壮絶なものでした。
ジャズ界、ロック界を代表する女性ヴォーカリストの歌声を聴きました。二人の人生には何か共通するものを感じます。
