今日の「聴き比べ」はボブ・ディラン(Bob Dylan)の『イフ・ナット・フォー・ユー (If Not for You)』です。
世間で物議を醸した１９６９年のアルバム『ナッシュビル・スカイライン(Nashville Skyline)』に続き、その騒ぎも収まらないうちに、またもや世間を騒がせた２枚組アルバム『セルフ・ポートレイト(Self Portrait)』発表しました。このアルバムはスタンダード・ナンバーやポップスのカバー、そしてオリジナルやワイト島のライヴ演奏が所々に収められています。このアルバムでは美声としわがれ声が混在しています。
そして、それから僅か４カ月後に発表されたのが『新しい夜明け(New Morning)』です。このアルバムでは声は元に戻っています。アルバムのトップを飾ったのがこの「イフ・ナット・フォー・ユー」です。ディランがようやく普通のアルバムを出したということで売れ行きもよく、全米７位、全英では１位となりました。このアルバムにはデヴィッド・ブロムバーグ、アル・クーパー、チャーリー・ダニエルズ、ラス・カンケル、ハーヴィー・ブルックスなど錚々たるメンバーが顔を揃えています。
この「イフ・ナット・フォー・ユー」はジョージ・ハリソンとのセッション中に生まれた曲です。ジョージもカバーしています。
