今日の「聴き比べ」は『アイ・ショット・ザ・シェリフ(I Shot The Sheriff)』です。
日本でジャマイカのレゲエ・ミュージックが知られるようになったのは、おそらく１９７３～４年頃だったのではないでしょうか。それはジミー・クリフ(Jimmy Cliff)の映画『ザ・ハーダー・ゼイ・カム』が公開されたことや、ボブ・マーリー＆ザ・ウェラーズ(Bob Marley & The Wailers)のデビューなどによることが大きいですが、それよりも一般的に多く浸透したのはエリック・クラプトン(Eric Clapton)がボブ・マーリーの『I Shot The Sheriff』をカバーし、全米ナンバーワンに輝いたことが大きな要因と思われます。
この曲はボブ・マーリー＆ザ・ウェイラーズの１９７３年のアルバム『Burnin'』に収録されました。このアルバムは全米でもゴールド・ディスクを獲得しました。

この曲を１９７４年、エリック・クラプトンがアルバム『461 Ocean Boulevard』でカバーしました。
このアルバムはシングル「I Shot The Sheriff」の大ヒットもあって全米１位になり売り上げ枚数も２００万枚を超えました。クラプトンはこれより前３年程は麻薬とアルコールの中毒に犯されており、ほとんど活動していませんでした。１９７３年にザ・フーのピート・タウンゼントの呼びかけでレインボー・シアターにおけるライブで復活を遂げ、パティ・ボイドとの暮らしも始まり、レコーディングの意欲が出て来ました。
そして発表された曲がこの曲だったのです。「レイドバック」などという言葉が流行り出したのもこの頃でした。
１９７４年の初来日における日本武道館での公演でも、イヴォンヌ・エリマンやカール・レイドルを従え、この曲を演奏していました。
