今日の「聴き比べ」は『ヒート・ウェイヴ(Heatwave)』です。
この曲は私などはザ・フー(The Who)の楽曲で知ったのですが、実は１９６３年のマーサ＆ヴァンデラス(Martha and the Vandellas)の全米４位になるヒット曲だったのです。
マーサとはご存じマーサ・リーヴス(Martha Reeves)のことです。彼らは大ヒット曲、『ダンシング・イン・ザ・ストリート(Dancing In The Street)』でよく知られています。アルバムも同名の『Heatwave』でした。いかにもモータウンのサウンドでした。
１９６７年にはザ・フーの２枚目のアルバム『クイック・ワン(A Quick One)』に収録されました。但し、アメリカ盤には収録されませんでした。日本語タイトルは「恋はヒートウェイヴ」でした。
そして、１９７５年にリンダ・ロンシュタッド(Linda Ronstadt)がアルバム『Prisoner In Disguise』でこの曲をカバーしました。これも全米５位となる大ヒットでした。このアルバムも全米１位を記録しました。
