今日の「聴き比べ」はキンクス(The Kinks)の１９６５年のヒット曲『エンド・オブ・ザ・デイ(Till The End of the Day)』です。
この曲は「You Really Got Me」以来ヒットを飛ばし続けるキンクスの１１枚目のシングルです。全英では６位にとどまったものの、相変わらずのキンクス人気でした。
アルバムではイギリスでの３枚目のアルバム『The Kink Kontroversy』に収録されました。これまたご機嫌なロック・ナンバーです。

この曲をアレックス・チルトン(Alex Chilton)率いるアメリカのパワー・ポップ・バンド、ビッグ・スター(Big Star)がカバーしました。
彼らの１９７５年の３枚目のアルバム『Third』は録音されるもリリースに至りませんでした。というのも、彼らの１st『#1 Record』、２nd『Radio City』、ともに一部ではかなり高い評価を得たにもかかわらず、商業的には全く不振でした。そして３枚目のアルバムも宣伝用に２５０枚がプレスされただけでお蔵入りになってしまいました。そしてバンドは解散。
ところが、１９７８年になってイギリスで１st、２nd、が発売されるとこれがファンの心をつかみました。そして幻のサード・アルバムが『Third/Sister Lovers』というタイトルで発売されました。このアルバムが１９９２年にボーナストラック付きで再発されました。そのボーナストラックに「Till The End of the Day」が収録されたのです。
それから数十年、キンクスのレイ・デイヴィス先生とアレックス・チルトンがレイ先生のアルバム『See My Friend』でこの曲を取り上げました。最高でしょう。
アレックス・チルトンはこのアルバムがリリースされた２０１０年に他界しました。５９歳でした。
