今日の「聴き比べ」はキャット・スティーヴンス(Cat Stevens)の『ザ・ファースト・カット・イズ・ザ・ディーペスト(The First Cut Is the Deepest）』です。
この曲はキャット・スティーヴンスが１９６７年に作った曲で、当初はP.P.アーノルド(P.P.Arnold)に楽曲を提供し、シングルで全英１８位のヒットになりました。
その後、同年にキャット・スティーヴンスは自身の２枚目のアルバム『New Masters』にこの曲を収録しました。
１９６８年にはジャマイカの女性ノーマ・フレイザー (Norma Frazer)がカバー、１９７３年にはカナダのシンガー、キース・ハンプシャー(Keith Hampshire)がカバーしカナダでナンバーワンのヒットとなりました。
そして日本でも最も有名になったのがロッド・スチュワート(Rod Stewart)のバージョンです。１９７６年のアルバム『ナイト・オン・ザ・タウン(A Night on the Town)』に収録され、その後シングル発売されて全英ナンバーワンになりました。日本語タイトル「さびしき丘」が付いています。
２００３年にはこのブログでも何度か取り上げたシェリル・クロウ(Sheryl Crow)がカバーし大ヒットしました。
