この曲は元々はジョン・デンバー(John Denver)が１９６６年に自主製作盤『John Denver Sings』の中に収められた曲でした。タイトルは「Babe, I Hate To Go」というものでした。
この曲を聴いたピーター・ポール＆マリー(Peter, Paul and Mary)がアルバム『Album 1700』の中でカバーしました。１９６７年でした。その後、１９６９年にこの曲をシングル・カットしたところ全米１位を記録したのです。
ジョン・デンバーもその年のアルバム『Rhymes & Reasons』に収録しました。
日本でもこの曲は売れました。
