今日の「聴き比べ」は『あなたしか見えない(Don't Cry Out Loud)』です。
この曲、私自身はリタ・クーリッジ(Rita Coolidge)のバージョンが一番馴染み深いのですが、実はたくさんの人が歌っています。
作曲はピーター・アレン(Peter Allen)、作詞はキャロル・ベイヤー・セイガー(Carole Bayer Sager)です。
最初に歌ったのがＲ＆Ｂのグループ、モーメンツ(The Moments)でした。１９７６年でした。そこそこのヒットで終わりました。
１９７７年には作曲したピーター・アレンもライヴで披露しています。
そして、１９７８年にメリサ・マンチェスター(Melissa Manchester)のカバーがヒットしたのです。日本では『哀しみは心に秘めて』というタイトルでした。後にこの曲を収録したアルバム『Don't Cry Out Loud』も『あなたしか見えない』とタイトルを変更しています。
同時期にイギリスの歌手エルキー・ブルックス(Elkie Brooks)もカバーし、これもヒットしました。
そして、日本で大ヒットしたのがリタ・クーリッジのバージョンです。彼女は前年にアルバム『Anytime...Anywhere』が大ヒットしていました。その勢いでこの曲を引っ提げて、東京音楽祭に参加し見事グランプリを獲得しました。そんな訳で、このバージョンが一番記憶に残っているという訳でした。
さらに、日本では大好きな伊東ゆかりさんが日本語でカバーしました。
