この曲の元歌はアメリカのブルースシンガー、ビッグ・ママ・ソートン(Big Mama Thornton)が１９６８年にアーフリー・レコードに吹き込んだものです。シングル盤で発売され、後にいくつかのコンピレーション・アルバムに収録されました。いくつかのバージョンがあり、シングルは２分強の長さです。その他にも何種類かの録音を残しています。

この曲が世界でも有名になったのは、やはり１９６７年のモントレー・ポップ・フェスティバルでビッグ・ブラザー＆ザ・ホールディング・カンパニー(Big Brother & The Holding Company)がこの曲を演奏してからでしょう。その時のリードボーカルがジャニス・ジョプリン(Janis Joplin)でした。これが大きな反響を呼び、その後アルバム『チープ・スルル(Cheep Thril)』やその他のライブ盤にも収録されました。
私も高校生の頃、はじめて映像を観た時にはぶったまげました。
