今日の「聴き比べ」は『レディ・フォー・ラヴ(Ready For Love)』です。
この曲はモット・ザ・フープル(Mott The Hoople)が１９７２年にリリースしたアルバム『すべての若き野郎ども(All the Young Dudes)』に収録された曲です。
このアルバムはデヴィッド・ボウイ(David Bowie)のプロデュースで、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドの「スウィート・ジェーン」やボウイの「すべての若き野郎ども」などをフューチャーしたアルバムで、なかなか人気の出なかった彼らの出世作となりました。
この「レディ・フォー・ラヴ」はリード・ギタリストのミック・ラルフス(Mick Ralphs)の曲になります。モット・バージョンではタイトルが「Ready for Love/After Lights」となります。アルバムの中では「すべての若き野郎ども」などの影に隠れがちですが、この曲も引けを取らない名曲だと思います。

Mott The Hoople - Ready For Love
作者のミック・ラルフスは以前から自分の作った曲はフリー(Free)のポール・ロジャース(Paul Rodgers)のような人に歌ってもらいたかった、といっていました。そしてそのポールと新たなバンド、バッド・カンパニー(Bad Company)を結成します。メンバーにはフリーからサイモン・カーク(Simon Kirke)とキング・クリムゾンからボズ・バレル(Boz Burrell)が参加しました。１９７３年のことでした。
そして翌年、彼らのデビューアルバム『バッド・カンパニーBad Company』がリリースされました。このアルバムは全米で１位に輝く大ヒットアルバムとなりました。シングルでは「キャント・ゲット・イナフ(Can't Get Enough)」が全米５位になるヒットでした。この曲もミックの曲でした。
そしてこのアルバムに「レディ・フォー・ラブ」が収録されました。ミックが願ったヴォーカリストに歌ってもらえたのです。
１９７５年の日本武道館でのライブが昨日のように思い出されます。もちろんこの曲も演奏しました。
バッド・カンパニーは紆余曲折があったものの、現在も活動中です。ポールもミックも在籍しています（ミックは２０１６年に脳卒中のため離脱中です）。さらにサイモン・カークもしっかり頑張っています。さすがにオフィシャルなアルバムは２０１１年以来途切れていますが、ライブで頑張っているのでしょう。頭が下がります。
