今日の「聴き比べ」は『木の船(Wooden Ships)』です。
この曲はデヴィッド・クロスビー(David Crosby)とスティーヴン・スティルス(Stephen Stills)、ポール・カントナー(Paul Kantner)が作った曲です。いわばクロスビー・スティルス＆ナッシュ(Crosby Stills & Nash)とジェファーソン・エアプレイン(Jefferson Airplane)の合作です。
この曲はベトナム戦争たけなわの１９６９年に書かれ、核兵器と核戦争の恐怖を歌ったものでした。

初めにリリースしたのがクロスビー・スティルス＆ナッシュ(CS&N)でした。彼らのファーストアルバム『Crosby Stills & Nash』に収録されました。
そしてニール・ヤングが加わったクロスビー・スティルス・ナッシュ＆ヤング(Crosby Stills Nash & Young)も１９６９年の『ウッドストック・コンサート』でこの曲を披露しました。

CS&Nがリリースして約半年後、ジェファーソン・エアプレインが５枚目のスタジオ・アルバム『Volunteers』に収録しました。歌詞が若干ながら変えてあります。

そしてジェファーソン・エアプレインも同じ『ウッドストック・コンサート』でこの曲を演奏しました。その模様は後に未発表曲を含んだ『The Woodstock Experience』に収められました。２０分を超えるロング・バージョンです。
