今日の「聴き比べ」は『ミスター・ビッグ(Mr.Big)』です。
アメリカのスーパー・グループ、『MR.ＢIＧ』のネーミングの元となった曲です。
フリー(Free)の１９７０年の３枚目のアルバム『Fire and Water』のオープニング曲です。
このアルバムはフリーの最大のヒットアルバムで全英でも２位になり、フリーの名を知らしめました。シングルの「オールライト・ナウ(All Right Now)」もビルボードの４位になる大ヒットとなりました。この頃のフリーを現わす、ヘヴィ・ロックという愛称がぴったりの重厚なサウンドとポール・ロジャースのボーカルが光ります。

この曲をガヴァメント・ミュール(Gov't Mule)が１９９５年のデビューアルバム『Gov't Mule』でカバーしました。その後、ライブ・アルバムにも収録されました。ミュールのデビュー作、いいですね。
今朝の新聞でロックンロールの先駆者リトル・リチャード(Little Richard)の逝去が報じられました。８７歳でした。チャック・ベリーらと並んでロック・ミュージックの礎を構築した大功労者でした。ビートルズやストーンズ、ボブ・ディランなども大きな影響を受けました。６０年代以降のロックが生まれたのもリトル・リチャード達のおかげです。私のように若干遅れてロックに嵌った人間にとっては、彼の名前は神様のようでした。
ちなみにフリーが初めて4人で演奏した曲はリトル・リチャードの『Good Golly Miss Molly』でした。
