今日の「聴き比べ」は『腰まで泥まみれ(Waist Deep in the Big Muddy)』です。
この曲は１９６６年にアメリカのフォークシンガー、ピート・シーガー(Pete Seeger)が書いた曲です。
ピート・シーガーと言えば「花はどこへ行った(Where Have All the Flowers Gone?)」や「ウィー・シャル・オーヴァー・カム(We Shall Overcome)」などで知られる、アメリカフォーク界の大御所でした。２０１４年に９４歳で亡くなっています。
そのピート・シーガーが第２次世界大戦中にルイジアナで訓練中に川で溺れ死んだ陸軍大尉のことを歌にした『腰まで泥まみれ』という歌を作りました。この歌は川の深さが変わっていたのを知らずに隊員たちに進軍を命令した大尉を大馬鹿野郎と罵った歌です。この大馬鹿野郎が当時ベトナム戦争に邁進していたジョンソン大統領を揶揄したものだと批判され放送禁止措置が採られました。

We heard a gurgling cry
A few seconds later, the captain's helmet
Was all that floated by
The Sergeant said, "Turn around men!
I'm in charge from now on."
And we just made it out of the Big Muddy
With the captain dead and gone
We stripped and dived and found his body
Stuck in the old quicksand
I guess he didn't know that the water was deeper
Than the place he'd once before been
Another stream had joined the Big Muddy

We were lucky to escape from the Big Muddy

ピート・シーガーは１９６７年に来日公演を行いました。その時にこの曲を聴いた中川五郎先生は早速訳詞をしてこの曲を歌い始めました。
そして１９６９年に六文銭との変則アルバムに収録されました。

昔僕が優秀な軍隊の隊員だった時、
月夜の晩にルイジアナで演習をした、
隊長は僕らに川を歩いて渡れと言った。
僕らは膝まで泥まみれだが隊長は言った「進め」
隊長危ない引き返そうと軍曹は言った
行くんだ軍曹オレは前にここを渡ったぞ
ぬかるみだけど頑張って歩き続けろ
僕らは腰まで泥まみれだが隊長は言った「進め」
隊長こんな重装備では誰も泳げません
そんな弱気でどうするかオレに付いて来い
俺達に必要なのはちょっとした決心さ

今なら間に合う引き返そうと軍曹が言った

裸になって水に潜り死体を見つけた
泥にまみれた隊長はきっと知らなかったのだ
前に渡ったよりもずっと深くなってたのを
僕らは泥沼から抜け出した「進め」と言われたが

でも新聞読むたび蘇るのはあの時の気持ち

そしてこの曲は岡林信康先生や高石友也先生によってもカバーされました。関西フォーク全盛時代でした。
我らが岡林信康先生は１９６９年の『あんぐら音楽祭 岡林信康リサイタル』に収録されています。
そしてなんと２０１５年にはあの元ちとせがアルバム『平和元年』でこの曲をカバーしました。びっくりするようなアレンジで歌っています。またこのアルバムでは先日聴き比べた「死んだ男の残したものは」もカバーしています。平和を願ってのアルバムでした。
