カーペンターズがまたしてもカバーしました。１９７３年のアルバム『ナウ・アンド・ゼン(Now & Then)』に収められました。このアルバムはヒット曲目白押しでした。

Carpenters "This Masquerade"

カーペンターズのこのカバー・バージョンは大好きです。曲がいいのはもちろんなのですが、カレンの声が実に曲にフィットしています。カレンの早すぎる死は返す返すも悔やまれます。

カーペンターズはカバーによるヒットが多いグループですが、特にレオン・ラッセルには足を向けて寝られませんね。

そういえばこの曲が一番売れたのが、なんとジョージ・ベンソン(George Benson)によるカバーでした。１９７６年の大ヒットアルバム『ブリージン(Breezin)』に収められましたが、ビルボードの１０位を記録しグラミー賞の最優秀レコード賞を獲得しました。フュージョンと言われるジャンルが流行り出した頃でした。
