今日の「聴き比べ」はイーグルス(Eagles) の『New Kid in Town』です。
この曲はイーグルスの１９７６年の５枚目のアルバム『ホテル・カリフォルニア(Hotel California)』に収録された曲です。
イーグルスはこのアルバムによって人気の絶頂期を迎えました。それまでのカントリー・ロックからアメリカン・ロックへと変わっていった集大成と呼べるようなアルバムでした。商業的にも売れに売れました。日本にもやってきました。日本武道館での公演もありました。
しかし、絶頂期と共に衰退の始まりでもありました。それは同時にウェストコースト・ロックの凋落でもありました。バーニー・レドン(Bernie Leadon)が去り、ジョー・ウォルシュ(Joe Walsh)が参加、やがてメンバー間の軋轢は激しさを増し、ランディ・マイズナー(Randy Maisner)はバンドを去りました。新たにポコ(Poco)のティモシー・シュミット(Timothy B Schmit)を迎えますが、アルバム１枚をリリースし、活動休止。そして１９８２年に正式解散に至ります。
リンダ・ロンシュタット(Linda Ronstadt)のバック・バンドとして活動を開始してから約１０年。地味な存在としてスタートしましたが、まるでアメリカン・ドリームを地でいくような目覚ましい出世ぶりでした。
この『New Kid in Town』はそんな彼らのことを歌っているようでした。今は亡きグレン・フレイ(Glenn Fley)は「この曲はホール＆オーツ(Daryl Hall & John Oates)に捧げたものだ」と言っていますが、これはまさに新旧交代の時期を表していたのではないでしょうか。
