今日の「聴き比べ」は『ボクサー(The Boxer)』です。
以前に聴き比べしたサイモン＆ガーファンクル(Simon &Garfunkel)の『明日に架ける橋』と同じアルバム『明日に架ける橋(Bridge over Troubled Water)』に収録されていた曲です。シングル発売はその前年の１９６９年でした。このアルバムはお化けアルバムというぐらいに数多くの名曲が並びます。当時の高校生も皆持っていました。
その中でも私が特に気に入っている曲がこの『ボクサー』です。曲はポール・サイモンです。

そしてこの曲をボブ・ディランがカバーしました。１９７０年発表の『セルフ・ポートレイト(Self Portrait)』です。このアルバムはほとんどがカバー曲で、しかもディランの声があのしゃがれ声から一変して美声になっています。この頃のディランは何を考えているのか、音楽界に留まらず世間でも話題になっていました。
ディランがこの曲を取り上げたのも、ポール・サイモンの『ボクサー』はディランのことを歌ったのではないかという話が囁かれていました。本人は否定しましたが、どうやらディランはそのあたりを気にかけてこの曲を取り上げたのではないでしょうか。
残念ながらオリジナルの映像がありません。代わりに１９９９年に二人が競演したときの音源がありました。
