今日の「聴き比べ」は『火の車(This Wheel’s on Fire)』です。
１９６６年ボブ・ディラン(Bob Dylan)がオートバイ事故を起こしたことによって、ディランと当時バックバンドを務めていたザ・ホークス（後のザ・バンド）のメンバーは休養を余儀なくされました。
ディランはウッドストック近郊の「ビッグ・ピンク」と呼ばれている家に住み着きました。ホークスのメンバーもウッドストックに移り住んでおり、彼らは「ビッグ・ピンク」の地下室でセッションを重ねました。その時の音源が１９７５年にアルバム『地下室(The Basement Tapes)』としてリリースされました。この中には数々の名曲が含まれていました。その中の１曲が「火の車(This Wheel’s on Fire)」です。このアルバムはそういう意味からも歴史的な価値あるアルバムです。
この曲は１９６８年にホークスがザ・バンドとして彼らのデビュー・アルバム『ミュージック・フロム・ビッグ・ピンク(
)』の中に納められました。このアルバムにはその他「地下室」からの「怒りの涙(Tears of Rage)」も含まれていました。ザ・バンドはアルバムには「アイ・シャル・ビー・リリースト」や「ザ・ウェイト」も含まれておりこのアルバムによって一流バンドの仲間入りを果たしました。曲はディランとリック・ダンコの共作です。
