聴き比べ『マイティ・クイン(The Mighty Quinn)』

今日の聴き比べはボブ・ディラン(Bob Dylan)の『マイティ・クイン(Mighty Quinn(Quinn the Eskimo))』です。

この曲はボブ・ディランが人気絶好調だった１９６６年に彼が起こしたモーター・バイク事故によってしばらくの間隠遁生活を余儀なくされた時期に書かれた曲です。このころのディランには様々な憶測が飛び交いました。もう亡くなったのではないかなど。

ディランは１９６５年頃には以前ロニー・ホーキンスのバックを務めていたホークス(The Hawks、のちのザ・バンド(The Band))を従えてツアーを行っていました。そして事故後はウッドストック近辺の自宅にホークスのメンバーを呼んでセッションを行っていました。この時に作られた曲が『マイティ・クイン』です。この時のセッションの模様はずっと後になって、１９７５年に『地下室(The Basemennt Tapes)』という2枚組のアルバムとして発表されましたが、この中にはこの『マイティ・クイン』は収録されませんでした。

ディラン自身のアルバムに初めて登場したのが１９７０年にリリースされた２枚組アルバム『セルフポートレート(Self Portrait)』でした。このアルバムは何かと物議を醸したアルバムでした。ここでの「マイティ・クイン」はザ・バンドを従えてのワイト島でのライブ音源でした。
