今日の聴き比べは『幸福の朝(Early in the Morning)』です。
この曲は１９６９年のイギリスのバンドヴァニティー・フェア(Vanity Fare)の最大のヒットなった曲です。ヴァニティー・フェアは１９６６年の結成のポップ・ロックバンドです。なかなかヒットに恵まれませんでしたが、この曲が大ヒットとなり、続く『夜明けのヒッチ・ハイク(Hitchin' a Ride)』も大ヒットとなりましたが、その後はなかなかヒット曲に恵まれず、次第に名前も聞かれなくなりました。しかし、どっこい未だに活動を続けているようです。もちろんメンバーは入れ替わっていますが凄いです。

ところがこの曲、日本ではもう一人のミュージシャンの方がヒットしたように記憶しています。それはクリフ・リチャード(Cliff Richard)です。クリフ・リチャードと言えばイギリスのエルヴィス・プレスリーと言われるくらいの大人気で、ビートルズの人気が出るまではイギリスのロックン・ロール界はクリフの独壇場でした。バックにはシャドウズ(The Shadows、当初名はThe Drifters)を従えていました。その人気たるや想像を絶するものがあったようです。残念ながら私はその時代には間に合いませんでした。
そのクリフがこの曲を競作したのです。日本での知名度からいったら断然クリフです。従ってこの曲もクリフ・バージョンの方が売れたと思います。
ちなみにこちらの日本語タイトルは「しあわせの朝」です。
