聴き比べ『ステイツボロ・ブルース (Statesboro Blues)』

今日の「聴き比べ」は『ステイツボロ・ブルース (Statesboro Blues)』です。

この曲はオールマン・ブラザーズ・バンド(The Allman Brothers Band)の今やライブアルバムの最高峰とまで言われるようになった、１９７１年発表の『フィルモア・イースト・ライブ(At Fillmore East)』のオープニングを飾る曲として有名になりましたが、もとを辿れば１９２８年にアメリカのブルースマン、ブラインド・ウィリー・マクテル(Blind Willie McTell)が発表した曲です。

彼はジョージア州トムソンの生まれで、ステイツボロは同じジョージア州の町です。長いストーリー性を持った詩ですが、オールマンズ・バージョンではかなり省略した短い詩になっています。

この曲をタジ・マハール(Taj Mahal)が彼の１９６８年のデビューアルバムでカバーしました。このアルバムではリード・ギターをジェシ・エド・デイヴィス(Jess Ed Davis)が、さらにリズムギターでライ・クーダー(Ry Cooder)が参加しています。これは名盤です。

そしてこの演奏を聴いたデュアン・オールマン(Duane Allman)は感銘し、早速タジ・マハールに会いに行きました。タジはジェシ・エド・デイヴィスを連れてきて、スライドギターを聴かせました。デュアンはそれからスライド・ギターを練習したのです。まだデュアンがオールマンズを結成する前のアワグラス(Hour Glass)時代のことでした。

そして、伝説の『フィルモア・イースト・ライブ』が１９７１年にリリースされ、オープニングを飾りました。ほぼタジ・マハール・バージョンを踏襲しています。

このアルバムはＣＤ時代になってから、未発表トラックを含め何度も発売されました。その度に買ってしまったりしました。

デュアン亡き後もディッキー・ベッツ(Dickey Betts)、ウォーレン・ヘインズ(Warren Haynes) 、デレク・トラックス(Derek Trucks)がそれぞれスライドギターを弾いてこの曲を受け継いできました。
